Industry Meets Classroom: Dr. Dindoruk’s PETE 310 Students Visit CoreLab facilities

Posted on March 22, 2026 by Sardar Asadov

Dr. Birol Dindoruk is one of the leading experts in PVT and fluid characterization in the global oil and gas industry. His work spans from developing technologies at the laboratory scale to successfully translating them into real-world industry applications. Through close collaborations with leading energy companies, Dr. Dindoruk continues to advance the science and practice of reservoir fluid analysis.

Last week, Dr. Dindoruk took students from the Reservoir Fluids (PETE 310-501) course at Texas A&M University on an educational field trip to the Houston facilities of Core Laboratories. The goal of the visit was simple but very important: to give students the opportunity to see with their own eyes how fluid experiments are actually performed in industry laboratories. After all, equations make a lot more sense once you’ve seen the real equipment behind them.

During the visit, students had the chance to speak directly with engineers and technical specialists, learning firsthand from their experience and insights. They also became familiar with how fluid characterization studies are conducted in industry, from experimental design to data interpretation.

Core Laboratories professionals introduced students to their laboratory equipment, explained the theory behind their measurements, and demonstrated how complex reservoir fluid properties are analyzed.

The trip concluded with a group photo and, of course, plenty of good memories.

We would like to sincerely thank the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University for organizing and supporting this trip, as well as Core Laboratories for hosting our students and allowing them to gain exposure to industry-standard laboratory practices.

Experiences like this help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world engineering, while reminding students that behind every equation is laboratory equipment doing the hard work.

Core Lab CCUS Workshop Showcases Integration of Experimental Science, Modeling, and Machine Learning

Posted on March 3, 2026 by Sardar Asadov

Last week, we had a highly productive day at the Core Lab CCUS Workshop, a collaborative effort between
Core Lab and Dr. Birol Dindoruk’s research group at
Texas A&M University. The workshop highlighted how experimental insights,
advanced modeling, and machine learning are coming together to accelerate progress in
carbon storage and CO2-EOR.

Key Highlights

  • Core Lab presented ongoing work on formation damage in CCUS, salt dry-out studies,
and provided an overview of Core Lab’s global rock catalog by
Stephen Drylie, Melissa Martin, and Katrina Cox.
  • Dr. Dindoruk’s Research Group presented:
  • Utkarsh Sinha — Physics-Informed Machine Learning (PIML) Chatbot: transforming review papers into interactive knowledge systems.
  • Shengyu Yao — Impact of Nanoscale Confinement on CO2 Adsorption Behavior in Shale: A GCMC Investigation.
  • Dr. Musa Ahmed and Dr. Fatemeh Tale — Macro-Scale Modeling Study of Kinetics of Permeability Changes in CO2-Saturated Brine Injection for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Sequestration.
  • Dr. Sherry Oyagha — Macro-Scale Modeling Study of Kinetics of Permeability Changes in CO2-Saturated Brine Injection for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Sequestration.
  • Jose Benavides — Bulk CO2 Diffusivity in Brine and Porous Media: A Machine Learning Approach for Deep Saline Aquifer Conditions.
  • Dr. Abdulrahman Abdulwarith — Prediction/Assessment of CO2 EOR and Storage Efficiency in Residual Oil Zones Using Machine Learning Techniques.
  • Dr. Birol Dindoruk — CO2 EOR fundamentals wrap-up session.

We gratefully acknowledge the members of the CCUS Consortium Industrial Affiliates
by Core Laboratories and Texas A&M University.
